This morning the WordFence team is posting a follow-up to their monthly attack report for March. During their analysis of last month’s data, they discovered that Algeria had moved from 60 on our “Top 25 Attacking Countries” list to position 24. That was a big jump for a country we rarely see. They dug deeper and uncovered a large distributed botnet made up of hacked home routers. They then went deeper and found that this is a global problem and that these hackers are all targeting WordPress websites.
In this morning’s post, WordFence explains how these routers were hacked, which ISPs are affected, how the attackers are behaving and why this may soon lead to one of the largest distributed attacks in internet history.
